Doyle Brunson ‘Always Thought of Robert E. Lee as My Hero’

The controversy over whether Confederate statues should be toppled may be spilling over into the poker community.

Texas poker icon Doyle Brunson tweeted on Friday:

I always had Robert E Lee as one of my hero's. Always felt he was defending his home, never thought about the fact he was defending slavery

Robert E. Lee was an American general known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the American Civil War from 1862 until his surrender in 1865.

Lee’s statues are common throughout the Southeast with his influence spreading beyond that region.  A park is named after him in the Texas progressive city of Dallas.

Some have argued that Lee and others stood for slavery and their likenesses in statue form should be removed from public places.  Others, like Brunson apparently, believe these Confederate figures represent their history and culture.

US President Donald Trump came under flack this week after condemning the removal of these statues, asking in a heated press conference whether Thomas Jefferson and George Washington monuments will be next.
